What is FOLIO?

Facilitated Online Learning Interactive Opportunity

FOLIO was orginally devised as a programme of online learning for health librarians in the UK. The FOLIO courses were comissioned by the National Library for Health (NLH), an electronic health library for staff working in the National Health Service (NHS), as part of the NLH Librarian Development Programme. The NLH Librarian Development programme was established to provide support for librarians moving into new roles, focusing on the development of skills in health informatics and knowledge management, especially related to digital libraries.

For an overview of the FOLIO programme, see the Facilitated Online Learning as an Interactive Opportunity (FOLIO): the experience of running a programme of online learning for health librarians presentation delivered in November 2005 at the 'E-learning and information literacy: initiatives and challenges' study day, run by Information for the Management of Healthcare (IfHM) and Libraries for Nursing (LfN).

Why online learning?

FOLIO was set up because librarians often find it difficult to get away from the workplace to attend training, whether because of staff shortages, limited budgets, travel time or other difficulties.

How has FOLIOz come about?

The Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) have comissioned the School of Health and Related Research (ScHARR) at the University of Sheffield to initally run a pilot followed by a set of three FOLIO courses for Australian librarians.
